Policlinica Barcelona has doctors who specialize in different treatments and surgeries of ophthalmology and a highly qualified support staff to assist the patient and offer a more personalized and professional treatment.
We exceed in taking care of disorders of the anterior segment of the eye (cornea, glaucoma, cataract), binocular vision and strabismus, oculoplasty, refractive surgery (presbiláser, myopia, astigmatism and farsightedness).

Out Patient
We make routine control visits, including age-specific studies, background and previous symptoms. Our great professionals at Polyclinic Barcelona who with their experience, work, loyalty and human commitment, make it possible for the daily progress towards offering our patients a level of quality of care within and outside our clinical center.

PB has a permanent service of ophthalmic emergencies in  which the internal medicine unit also colaborates, laboratory personnel, surgical equipment and anesthesia unit.

PB has rooms for hospital patients and outpatients.

Every patient that must be intervened, receives individual atention by the coordinator of the ophthalmology unit and informs him/her of all the procedures to follow for the intervention (preoperative evaluation, monitoring, treatment, postoperative control and economic conditions.

Defects of refraction
These are the defects that prevent us from having a good vision as a result of the lack of focus of the image on the retina. These visual defects can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, for people who do not want to depend on them, PB offers patients a service to be operated with the laser technique EXCIMER or intraocular lens implants, for which we follow a strict protocol of selection and information to the patient to assess his needs and expectations.

Emmetropic eye
It is the eye that provides good vision, it produces a good focus of the image observed,  so as a result it does not need any kind of correction such as glasses or contact lenses.

Myopic eye
In the myopic eye, the image is focused before reaching the retina, and when it comes to it it is already unfocused so that´s why the first symptom of a myopic eye is poor long distance vision.

Hyperopic eye
It is a refractive error in which the image is focused behind the retina, so that close objects are blurred. In most cases its because the eyes are shorter than normal or the corneas are flat.

It is a refractive error in which the cornea has an abnormal curve, causing a blurred vision of objects both far and near.
Astigmatism may coexist with nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Diabetic Retinopathy
It is an ocular complication of diabetes. It is due to the deterioration of blood vessels supplying the retina fundus. These weakened blood vessels can let blood or liquid out that injure or form fibrous tissue in the retina and subsequently the image sent to the brain is blurred.
Early detection and proper treatment by laser photocoagulation reduces the risk of visual loss by over 60%.

Degeneration of the retina that affects the macular area (responsible for central vision): Staining: necessary for everyday activities like reading, driving or to identify individuals.

Refractive Surgery
The LASIK technique (laser in situ keratomileusis) is the most widely used nowadays for its safety and effectiveness. It is the modification / sculpting the shape of the cornea (by applying the excimer laser in it. Previously it has lifted a thin layer of corneal tissue that is then repositioned and adheres without sutures.

The correction is performed with minimal patient discomfort and a very quick recovery.
Anesthesia: is topical (with drops). The accuracy and safety of the LASIK technique makes it the most common surgical procedure for most refractive defects.

In some cases where the art LASIK surgery is not indicated, the solution to the refractive problem can be done using other techniques such as phakic intraocular lenses (which are placed without removing the lens) or Pseudophakic (which are implanted in place of lens).
On those occasions in which the excimer laser can not eliminate all the refractive error, such as in high myopia (greater than 10 diopters), the high hyperopia (up to 5 diopters), and some astigmatism, it is possible to correct implanting intraocular lenses. Also in cases in which the excimer laser is contraindicated.

The choice of one technique or another, will depend on the discretion of the surgeon, and patient characteristics (number of diopters, eye conditions, and age).
The intraocular lens surgery is also performed as an outpatient, the anesthesia is with with drops and without injection, and recovery of vision begins immediately after the intervention.

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Early diagnosis:

Go to the ophthalmologist if you suspect:

  • Poor vision
  • Strabismus
  • Leukocoria (white spot on the pupil)
  • Double vision
  • Continuously rubbing eyes.
  • Unusual behavior or gestures such as: Zoom in or out excessively when reading the paper, excessive closeness to computer, TV, constant blinking, red eyes .. etc)
  • Lacrimal Obstruction
